Even as Puducherrians sign up for tango and salsa classes, what excites dance-savvy foreigners who arrive in this city for varying periods of stay?
According to dance schools, most foreigners who have made the city their second home, or international visitors here for a few months, usually pick up a dance they already know such as ballet but when it comes to their children they enrol them in newer dance styles.
La Casita, for instance, attracts a mixed clientele, with a majority being residents comprising students, homemakers and expatriates.
“While foreigners prefer learning Bollywood dance, many who have already discovered Latin dance earlier follow up with it during their stay,” says Kash Dolma Timmers at La Casita.
“Tourists drop in to discover about Indian dance styles such as Bollywood and Bharatanatyam. Most of them naturally turn to the Bollywood sessions which are a nice blend of different dances and can be done by anyone,” says Fleur Soumer at SITA.
La Casita too has launched Bollywood dance and freestyle classes due to high demand, says Ms. Kash.
“Except for the Bollywood classes and one time workshops, we enrol batches on a monthly basis. So, most of our clients are those who stay in the city for work or on long vacation,” says Ms. Kash.
