Going by the self-titled name 'Animal Titans', a group of 18-year-olds have taken up the cause of stray dogs and cats in Mumbai. On Thursday, they launched their banner 'Adoptizione' that will focus on rescuing and rehabilitating strays during the monsoon.

Each monsoon sees a higher number of animal casualties as many kittens climb into car engines to try and stay warm, while many dogs and puppies find it harder to fight the water, and the weaker ones become more vulnerable to diseases.

The banner launch was attended by actors Mimoh Chakraborty and Evelyn Sharma. Also in attendance was Chakraborty's cousin Quiien Banerjee.

An avid dog lover, Banerjee said: "What people don't realise is that stray dogs generally have higher immunity and are better suited to the Indian climate. When you buy a dog of a foreign origin, s/he is more likely to fall sick. Thus, Indian strays are much less likely to require visits to the vet."

Banerjee has adopted 9 strays, both cats and dogs, and has also been feeding stray dogs with a meal a day for the past decade.

Yash Ram Shahani (18), founder and chairperson of Animal Titans said, "We wanted to do something for the stray animals of the city. So, we will hold Adoptizione on August 9, so that the strays can be saved from the harsh monsoon. Till then, we want to create awareness of the initiative."

Also an 18-year-old, Sakshi Mehra, the director of the organisation, explained the pre-adoption process, saying: "We have partnered with World For All, whose members place all the rescued animals in foster homes after they have been given a medical check-up. When potential adopters call, they do a thorough check about their suitability."

Sakshi also said that they will also be doing a follow-up to check that the pet is not ill-treated, in which case the adoption will be terminated."
