Head of the International Red Cross in Europe and Central Asia Loran Korba said Friday that the delivery of humanitarian aid to crisis-hit Donbass through Ukraine faces obstacles.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The delivery of humanitarian aid to crisis-hit Donbass through Ukraine faces obstacles, head of the International Red Cross (ICRC) in Europe and Central Asia Loran Korba said Friday.

Numerous and complicated administrative procedures and restrictions for the convoys in Ukraine impede the process of the delivery, Korba said in an interview with the Russian newspaper Kommersant.

Urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to Donbass is absolutely necessary, and the obstacles should be reduced, because the situation in the region is "still fragile," according to Korba.

He also expressed hope that the disputes over the delivery of aid would be discussed by the working groups in Minsk, and all the contradictions would be resolved.

The ICRC was interested in the implementation of the Minsk agreements and was ready to contribute, for instance, to provide monitoring and assessment, Korba stressed.

The people of Ukraine's Donbass have been suffering from a severe humanitarian crisis since Kiev launched a military operation against local independence supporters in April, 2014.

Since August, 2014, Russia has already sent 27 humanitarian aid convoys with more than 34,000 metric tons of aid to Donbass.
