Many die of sunstroke across Telangana; heat wave conditions to continue

As many as three persons are reported to have succumbed to sunstroke in Adilabad district on Wednesday which takes the unofficial toll of such deaths in the district to 11. The district administration, however, says only five sunstroke deaths have been reported so far.

According to reports, the first death, that of Soyam Ramdas (24) of Dhanora (B), Indervelli mandal occurred on April 21 followed by the death of a MGNREGS worker Khadkar Balaji (26) on April 24. Others who are reported to have died of sunstroke are Kodapa Bheem Rao of Balaraopet in Luxettipet mandal on May 7, Munde Gnaneshwar of Jalda in Ichoda mandal on May 9, Taneer Tulsidas (50) of Bhagyanagar, Nirmal and Manepalli Nagaiah (45) of Rebbenpalli, Bejjur on May 11, Lolam nanth (40) of Soan in Nirmal mandal on May 14 and Kova Jadi (38) of Rampur in Kasipet mandal, Jugnak Dev Rao (26) of Jamuldhara in Sirpur (U) and Ramulu (67) of Shantinagar in Adilabad, all having died on May 20.

Meanwhile, heat wave conditions prevailed in the district on Thursday restricting movement of people to a large extent. Adilabad recorded a maximum temperature of 45 degree Celsius.

In Karimnagar, the temperature crossed 46 degree Celsius claiming five lives in various parts of the district on Thursday. Reports reaching here said that Kistaiah (75) of Potharam village in Husnabad mandal; Rajamallu (80), a resident of Ambedkarnagar in Husnabad mandal; Sammaiah (50), an auto-rickshaw driver of Gollapalle village in Shankarpatnam mandal; Rajamouli (55) of Polasa village of Jagtial mandal and Vajravva (45) of Peddalingapur village of Illanthakunta mandal reportedly died of sunstroke on Thursday.

The heat wave conditions forced people to remain indoors. The temperature reached 47 degree Celsius in the Ramagundam coal belt area. The coal miners had a tough time working here and coal production was hit at the open cast projects.

Fire at FCI

Meanwhile, the soaring temperatures have reportedly caused fire at Fertilizer Corporation of India (FCI) in Ramagundam mandal. In Sangareddy, three deaths due to sunstroke were reported. While Pedda Lakshmi (50), a MNREGS worker died of sunstroke on Wednesday, two others – Shourya (60) of Ambajipet in Chinnashankarampet mandal and Gaddam Narasaiah (65) of Veluru village in Wargal mandal – died on Thursday. However, district officials said that they have no details of sunstroke deaths yet.

Narayanakhed recorded 43 degrees Celsius temperature on Thursday. As per the weather report, the heat wave conditions will continue for another three to four days.

In the last four days, three persons died of sunstroke in Nizamabad district. The deceased were identified as Togari Lakshmi (71) of Siranpally village in Navipet mandal, Byagari Gangavva (50) of Mirjapur village in Beerkur mandal and Gandla Narsaiah (65), an agriculture worker. On Thursday, people mostly stayed indoors due to rising temperatures. Busy roads and market centres were deserted.

In Warangal, 11 persons have reportedly succumbed to severe heat wave conditions since Wednesday across the district. The temperature hovered around 44 degree Celsius.In Khammam, two persons, including a mentally challenged woman, reportedly died of sunstroke in separate incidents in Madhira and Nelakondapalli mandals on Thursday.

According to sources, a 30-year-old mentally challenged woman collapsed after getting exposed to intense sunlight in the vicinity of her house at Illandulapadu in Madhira mandal. She succumbed to sunstroke while being shifted to a hospital, sources added. In another incident, a tailor reportedly died of sunstroke. Meanwhile, intense heat wave conditions continued to sweep the entire district.
