Activists of the slum morcha of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday staged a protest here demanding that the bridge across Tunga canal along the Jail Road be repaired immediately.
Addressing the protest meet, S. Dattatri president of the BJP district unit, said that the Jail Road was the main link for Vinobha Nagar, J.H. Patel Extension, Ravindra Nagar and Rajendra Nagar localities with the rest of the city. The vehicular movement along this stretch was always heavy.
Although the bridge across the Tunga canal was in a dilapidated state for several years, no action had been initiated so far for its repair, he said.
The vehicular movement along the bridge had become unsafe as the protection wall constructed on its either sides had collapsed. Incidents of vehicles accidentally falling into the canal and commuters suffering serious injuries had become common on the stretch. Although the Executive Engineer of the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd., conducted a spot inspection in November last, and submitted a report to the government, recommending immediate repairs for the bridge, no action had been taken in this regard so far. The government should release the necessary funds for the repair of the bridge, he said.
Functionaries of the BJP H. Shashidhar, S. Kumar, Venkatesh, Satishchandra and Anandappa were present.
The bridge is said to be the only link between Vinobha Nagar, Ravindra Nagar, Rajendranagar and the rest of the city
