NEW DELHI: Weeks after TOI reported how there has been no progress in the Soumya Vishwanathan murder case owing to lack of a public prosecutor, the Delhi government on Thursday has assured the parents of the journalist that a special public prosecutor would be appointed very soon.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has also promised Soumya’s parents that he would try to get the case fast-tracked.
Soumya was killed in September 2008, allegedly by a gang of criminals while driving home from work. Her case has been dragging for almost seven years.
On April 29, TOI carried a report ‘6 yrs on, justice eludes kin of Soumya, Jigisha’ describing how Soumya and another young woman, Jigisha Ghosh, allegedly killed by the same gang in March 2009, have been denied justice for so long.
TOI had reported that there has been absolutely no progress in the two cases since October when Rajiv Mohan, who was the public prosecutor in these two cases, resigned.
Soumya’s parents—M K Vishwanathan and Madhavi—who met Kejriwal and minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday were happy with the government’s assurance. The Home department told Soumya’s parents that it would request Rajiv Mohan, who is now engaged in private practice, to take up the case again as special public prosecutor since he knows its details well.
“The parents were told that the Delhi government will bear the expenses of special prosecutor and will move an application for putting the case on fast track,” the government said in a statement.
