CPM resolution accuses VS of being UDF stooge
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On a day when corruption charges resurfaced against senior CPM leader Elamaram Kareem, the party chose to go on its own offensive by accusing veteran V S Achuthanandan of, among other things, helping the UDF government divert public attention from its many alleged misdemeanours.
A four-page resolution adopted by the CPM state secretariat on Thursday accused VS of trying to build a parallel party leadership in the state, indulging in one-upmanship, pursuing a divisive agenda apart from regularly bailing out the UDF.
The resolution has been forwarded to the CPM central committee. The CC, scheduled to meet on June 6 and 7 in New Delhi, will discuss the resolution and is likely to pass it to the politburo commission probing intra-party issues in the state.
The resolution, presented in the state secretariat by state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, was unanimously adopted. VS didn't attend the meeting as he was not invited. Later, Kodiyeri read out the resolution at a news conference and claimed that this was a measure to correct the nonagenarian leader. To a query whether the resolution was part of disciplinary action, he answered in the negative.
Though VS's statements last Sunday, criticising former state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and former general secretary Prakash Karat for election failures and weakening LDF, were refuted by the politburo the next day itself, the secretariat decided on the resolution as VS criticised the PB statement too. "VS said that PB hasn't understood things fully. This is equivalent to challenging PB. Hence, the secretariat is compelled to clarify certain things to prove that PB's statement was not out of misunderstanding", Kodiyeri said.
The strongly-worded resolution is a follow-up of the resolution passed by the state secretariat on the eve of CPM state conference in Alappuzha in February and claims that all issues raised by VS have been settled through debates within the party starting from the 17th party congress.
Regarding initiatives by VS to bring back parties like RSP and JD (U) to the LDF fold, the resolution said that expansion of LDF was a decision taken in the 21st party congress and in the state committee. "But VS is presenting this as his personal initiative. VS is trying to manipulate the correct stand taken by the CPM central leadership", the resolution said.
Kodiyeri clarified that VS would be leading LDF in the assembly when the monsoon session begins on June 7, and added that in the assembly VS always took a firm stance against UDF. The resolution concludes with a request to VS: "Don't make public statements that are different from the party's perspective. Should obey collective decisions taken by the state committee".
