Mid Street is aptly named, as it stands out from the other establishments on Thiruvalluvar Street, Mogappair East. It’s trendy enough to grab eyeballs and yet, manages not to look too flashy.

The decor is charming with quirky images, including that of food and street signs, adorning the walls. One sign even declares free Wi-Fi for diners. In keeping with the theme, the floor leading up to the counter is recreated to look like a street, with seating on either side — comfortable armchairs on one end, and long tables on the other. I sit on a cushioned armchair, and it is a while before I realise that it is a self-service joint. The staff seem indifferent, even as I approach the counter.

I glance at the menu; the list of what Mid Street has to offer is overwhelming, ranging from chaat, finger foods, burgers and sandwiches, to softies, sundaes and milkshakes that are categorised as “rich-thick” and “special-thick”.

The reason for this, according to owner Kaushik Mohan, is because, “Softy ice-cream is mixed in with the shakes, making it milkier.”

As I scan the menu, my breakfast-bereft stomach makes the choice for me: an aloo tikki burger and a “special-thick” hazelnut shake, followed by an Irish creation sundae.

I enjoy the aloo tikki burger the most — neither too big nor too small. The buns are toasted to crispy perfection and the tender patty is simply delicious — cooked just right. Unlike many burger places, Mid Street does not enthusiastically pile on the mayo.

Fictional genius Sheldon Cooper’s review of the Cheesecake Factory’s burger applies here: Mid Street's aloo tikki has the perfect condiment-to-burger ratio.

On the other hand, the hazelnut shake does not impress as much. It is too sweet for my liking, probably taking that “special-thick” moniker a bit far. The Irish creation sundae is fine. It comes with an overload of vanilla cream, making it a struggle to finish. The garnish of white chocolate chips, though, along with a spritz of coffee sauce, makes for a nice finale.

Mid Street is great for a quick meal, which isn’t a strain on the wallet. However, it can do much better in terms of service.

And though the dessert menu offers good variety, the quality calls for some improvement.

Mid Street is located at No. 49, KKR Complex, Thiruvalluvar Road, Mogappair East. Ice-creams are priced from Rs. 70 onwards. Call 30853849
