Mats Hummels 'will not be joining Manchester United'

Mats Hummels will not be moving to Manchester United, according to Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

The Germany international has been a long-standing target of Louis van Gaal's, who is keen to strengthen his defence this summer.

Hummels had been widely expected to quit Dortmund after their disappointing season in the Bundesliga, but Zorc told German football magazine Kicker that the international centre-half had decided to remain at the club.

“It was legitimate that Mats thought about his future,” Zorc said. “But I have told him that we are planning with him for the future.”

Zorc said there was a “clear consensus” between Dortmund and Hummels over his future, despite the fact that Jurgen Klopp - the club's coach - has decided to quit at the end of the season.

United are now likely to have to turn their attention to other targets but the need for reinforcements is becoming increasingly urgent.

Defender Jonny Evans is likely to leave United this summer with the club failing to offer him a new contract, so Van Gaal will be keen to add a senior defender to his ranks.
