BENGALURU: Mark Zuckerberg, for the most part, runs the world's largest social network standing. Leonardo Da Vinci stood up to design his many innovations and masterworks, including the Mona Lisa. Ernest Hemmingway liked to write standing. And so did Charles Dickens.

A number of offices are waking up to the benefits of standing while at work, although more as a precaution against the downsides to sitting long hours it's the new `smoking' than for productivity gains. Catching up with the trend pioneered by Yahoo and Google in the city, many firms in Bengaluru are providing employees standing workstations, even if these can be a tad expensive. Infosys, Cisco, Robert Bosch, Linkedin, Bang the Table, Ittiam Systems, Mapbox, In stamojo, and Decathlon have all installed standing desks at their city offices. These desks, most of them easily adjustable, have become popular among the tech crowd, espe cially for conducting small meetings. "It's nice not to sit throughout the day," said Sajjad Anwar, a developer at MapBox."I am more focused while standing than sitting."

Hiran Venugopalan, a designer at Bang the Table, said shared standing workstation at his office can accommodate four people and is best suited for short meetings. "The table can be used as a drawing board too; our meetings are quicker and more focused there."Yahoo installed standing workstations at its Bengaluru office about a decade ago as part of its Ergo programme. "We believe that a proper ergonomic setup at our offices can maximise productivity and efficiency... If employees are tired of sitting at one place they walk up to the unwind zones and work out of these standing stations," a Yahoo spokesperson told ET. For Google, standing desks are a part of its wellness initiative. "Sitting for long hours in wrong postures can cause serious harm. With standing desks, employees have the flexibility to manage their workspace according to their fitness needs," said a Google spokesperson.

Debajyoti Mukherjee, general managermodular at furniture retailer Featherlite India, credits multinational firms with introducing the western concept of standing workstations, which they can afford."Standing workstations cost more than . 45,000 each unit," he said. "Since smaller ` companies cannot easily afford many, they buy a few for their higher officials."
