MTA won’t have mandated safety system in place until 2018

The MTA said Wednesday it doesn’t expect to install a high-tech control system that can stop a speeding train until 2018 — three years later than required by federal law.

Legislation was enacted in 2008 requiring railroads to install a positive train control system by the end of 2015, but the MTA did not get a loan for the system until last month. Positive train control could have prevented last week’s deadly Amtrak crash near Philadelphia.

The Federal Railroad Administration can impose fines on railroads that don’t comply, but legislators are considering an extension of three to seven years on the original 2015 deadline.
