The arrest of one more person has been recorded in connection with the Kovalam heist of March 28.

H. Venkatesh, City Police Commissioner, said the accused, Jahangir Alam, 28, from Malda of West Bengal was nabbed from Mangaluru. His arrest was recorded at the Kovalam police station on Wednesday and he would be produced before court on Thursday. A sum of Rs.50,000 had been recovered from him, Mr. Venkatesh said.

The accused, it is learnt, had worked with a religious institution in Kannur earlier and was allegedly one of the brains behind the Kovalam heist, in which gold ornaments valued at Rs.50 lakh and Rs.2.6 lakh in cash were stolen from the Kovalam branch of Muthoot Finance in the early hours of March 28.

Jahangir has reportedly revealed to the police the whereabouts of the rest of the gang, who would be nabbed soon, Mr. Venkatesh said.

This was the second arrest in the case, after the arrest of Hari Om Mandal, 25, from Payattuvila, near Uchakkada, in the first week of May.

Mandal, along with Jahangir, had allegedly brought the other members of the gang, reportedly around 10 or more in number, from Jharkhand, to Kovalam.

The Commissioner said Jahangir was traced to Mangaluru with the help of mobile tower signals and other ‘scientific’ methods.
