If anybody was seen littering on Car Street, these students raised their voices. Then they collected the litter and proceeded further.
Students on a holiday camp at Swroopa Adhyayana Kendra were on a unique campaign to stop people from littering here on Wednesday.
As many as 25 students of the kendra moved on Car Street with a chariot made out of a vegetable push cart. “We raise our voice to applaud the person who litters as he has provided us with an opportunity to pick it up,” said Devaskanda, a Class 9 student from Kollegal, who was sporting a handmade cap that had a message ‘For the love of earth’.
Apart from wearing caps made out of newspapers, these children also sported messages on their clothes. They also had painted their faces. Some of the students marched wearing Yakshagana costumes.
“People continue to litter even while roads are being cleaned every day. Through this, we want to tell the people to stop littering. The best way is to make children practice it. They will carry it forward,” said Gopadkar of the kendra, who conceptualised the campaign. It took nearly 20 days to make these children keep their surroundings clean, he added.
Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim launched the campaign. Mr. Ibrahim asked Mr. Gopadkar to involve the Mangaluru City Corporation in their campaign to make it effective. Mr. Ibrahim said there was need for the city to set high standards in cleanliness and hygiene.
