K. Anilkumar, a 45-year-old from Sasthamcotta in Kollam district, Kerala, was found dead and G. Vijayalakshmi (40), his lover, unconscious in a lodge at R.S. Puram in the city on Sunday. They had cut their wrists and consumed poison.

According to police, preliminary inquiry revealed that both were from the same place. Vijayalakshmi was married to Gopalakrishnan and has two sons. Anilkumar, married to another woman, has a daughter and a son. Anilkumar and Vijayalakshmi eloped from Sasthamcotta in the first week of this month.

The police said that Gopalakrishnan lodged a complaint with the Sasthamcotta Police on May 10, stating that his wife went missing, based on which the police registered a case and were on the lookout for the woman.

Meanwhile, Anilkumar and Vijayalakshmi went to Karnataka and came to the city on Thursday evening. They took a room on the fifth floor of the lodge. As the two did not come out of the room, the management on Sunday broke open the door.

Hotel staff found the two in an unconscious condition. While Anilkumar died soon after, Vijayalakshmi was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and treated in the intensive care unit. She is said to be out of danger.

The police registered the case under 174 (suspicious death) of the Code of Criminal Procedure and were investigating. There were unconfirmed claims that a suicide note was recovered from the lodge.
