Chicago Blackhawks player headbutts puck into net in overtime ... but it didn't count

After almost four hours of hockey, you can’t blame the guy for trying to get creative.

The Chicago Blackhawks faced off against the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday night in Game 2 of the Western Conference final, trailing in the series 1-0.

After the Blackhawks jumped out to a quick lead, the score became knotted at 2-2 early in the second period and stayed that way into a second overtime period. That’s when things started getting silly. Pucks rang off posts. Goaltenders made impossible saves. And Blackhawks centerman Andrew Shaw thought he’d won it for Chicago when he headbutted a puck into the net.

Yes. Headbutted.

So cool, right? What a way to win the game!

But alas, this isn’t soccer, and off the head is not a recognized scoring method by the NHL. The goal was disallowed after a brief review by officials.

So play resumed, and the Ducks and Blackhawks returned to looking for conventional ways to end the game.

Eventually (or, at the 16:12 mark of the THIRD overtime period), Marcus Kruger buried an allowed goal for the Blackhawks and they took the game 3-2, almost five full hours after the puck dropped.
