BJP's national secretary Tarun Chugh is in the thick of a controversy after some SAD leaders objected to his name being inscribed on plaques of foundation stones laid for various developmental works in the city.

AMRITSAR: BJP's national secretary Tarun Chugh is in the thick of a controversy after some SAD leaders objected to his name being inscribed on plaques of foundation stones laid for various developmental works in the city.
Earlier, Congress leaders had raised strong objections to Chugh's name being written on the plaques. Akali leaders, including Avtar Singh, Surinder Sultanwind and Amarjit Bhatia, wanted a check on this practice.
According to sources, these leaders had also taken up the issue with deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal during his visit to the city on Tuesday. However, SAD district president (urban), Upkar Singh Sandhu expressed ignorance about the issue. When contacted, Chugh said, "They (Akali's) are part of my family; I will talk to them."
Attari station renamed as 'Attari Sham Singh'
Chandigarh: Punjab government on Tuesday said it has renamed Attari railway station in Amritsar as "Attari Sham Singh" railway station in a tribute to the great Sikh General. The railway station was renamed after General Sham Singh Attariwala who joined the Sikh military in 1817 and during the Afghan-Sikh wars, he participated in the Battle of Attock, Battle of Multan, Battle of Peshawar and the 1819 Kashmir expedition, an official spokesman said.
Tardy lifting of wheat: Farmers block highway
Nawanshahr: Farmers and Congress workers on Tuesday blocked Phagwara-Chandigarh state highway for around an hour to protest against delay in procurement and lifting of their crop in mandis in the district. Led by Banga MLA Tarlochan Singh Soondh, the famers alleged that there had been no procurement at Katarira mandi for the past several days while the crop was not being lifted from Behram and Soondh mandis.
US envoy to interact with CII members
Amritsar: In an effort to boost business ties, US ambassador to India Richard R Verma will interact with the members of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Punjab State Council on May 21 in a session on promoting India-US partnership in business and industry being organized by CII at Jalandhar. He is visiting Punjab under the US embassy's outreach programme, said a CII release. Verma would elaborate on the strengths of US and the potential areas in which tie-ups, partnerships and joint ventures could be entered into between the industry from Punjab and their counterparts in the US.
