Jisshu to reprise Uttam Kumar's role in Chiriyakhana remake?
Forty-eight years after Satyajit Ray told this detective tale with Uttam Kumar as the hero, Anjan Dutt is set to revisit Chiriyakhana with his brand new Byomkesh Bakshi, Jisshu U Sengupta.
Anjan has apparently asked his hero to read the Saradindu Bandyopadhayay story at least five times before the shoot begins. The story revolves around a retired judge, Nishanath Sen, living in a farmhouse, Golap Colony, on the city's outskirts.
The people who stay in the colony are a handful of social outcasts. After Sen is found dead under mysterious circumstances, Byomkesh takes up the probe.
The story goes that Ray procured the rights of Chiriyakhana from Durga Prasad Chakraborty, father of Prabir Chakraborty, who now handles the rights to all of Saradindu's works. Both were batchmates in Presidency College, before Ray quit and moved to Santiniketan. Prabir had earlier confirmed that the rights to Chiriyakhana are with Anjan. He further stressed that he has heard that this is likely to be the director's next Byomkesh film.

When CT got in touch with Jisshu, he said, It's true that Anjanda has asked me to read the story multiple times. He is keen on making Chiriyakhana." Ask him about comparisons with Ray's Byomkesh, Uttam Kumar, and he said, No one is even trying to match up to Uttam Kumar, though I know there may be comparisons, which is highly unfair. Satyajit Ray had his own take on the story and Anjanda will do it his way."
Meanwhile, Dutt is busy with the post-production of his film on Kahen Kobi Kalidas. He has yet another project in the pipeline Hamlet. But if things go as expected, Chiriyakhana will be his next Byomkesh film.
