Villagers upset over plan to acquire land

May 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:07 am IST - THANJAVUR:

Hundreds of villagers from Pattukottai region of Thanjavur district have submitted petitions to the district administration not to forcibly acquire land for the revised Thanjavur-Pattukkottai rail link plan.

Villagers from Kannanthankudi, Melaiyur, Paruthikkottai, Mela Uloor, Soorakkottai, Varavukkottai, Nayakankottai and Madigai submitted a petition to District Collector N.Subbaiyan stating that the government had already acquired land for establishing the Thanjavur-Orathanad-Pattukkottai rail line project.

In those circumstances, they contended, survey was being done to re-align the project and acquire new lands for the revised project.

If done, then scores of small and marginal farmers would lose their livelihood and residences and considering that the lands originally acquired for the purpose between Orathanad and Muthambal Chatram must be retained and no new lands must be acquired, they urged.
