Free Manikganj canals from encroachers
People of Manikganj Sadar upazila formed a human chain on Dhaka-Aricha highway near Manikganj bus stand yesterday, demanding immediate steps to save Manora-Joyra and Manora-Bhatbaur-Muljan canals.
Dhaleswari Nodi Banchao Andolon, Bhatbaur IPM Club (an organisation of farmers), Krishak Samity, Prothom Alo Bandhusava, Chhatra Kalyan Sangstha and Uttaran (an organisation of youths) jointly arranged the human chain on Dhaka-Aricha highway near Manikganj bus stand yesterday.
People from Muljan, Bhatbaur, Manora, Joyra and Manikganj town, including farmers, teachers, and students, joined the hour-long programme that began at11:00am.
Addressing the rally at the venue, the speakers said some local influential people have been constructing buildings, hospitals and others structures by encroaching on the canal at Bhatbaur, Manora, Joyra, Muljan, Notun-Bosoti areas of Manikganj sadar upazila. The local administration did not take any steps yet to remove the structures.
Convener of Dhaleswari Nodi Banchao Andolon Azharul Islam Arzu, secretary of Bhatbaur IPM Club Amzad Hossain, president of Uttaran Bimal Roy, president of Prothom Alo Bandhusava Mahbub Alam Russel, assistant teacher of Afroza Ramzan Girls' High School Arshed Ali, farmer Shukur Ali, and Md Nuruzzaman, a student, spoke at the rally.
They urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to free the canals. They also threatened to call a tougher agitation if the demand was not met immediately.
They submitted a memorandum to Aminul Haque, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Manikganj Sadar.
Contacted, the UNO said the local administration will start an eviction drive within a short time.
