Rain helps Mettur dam get more water

The recent rain in catchment areas in Salem and Dharmapuri districts and in Madheswaran Hills has increased the inflow of water to Stanley Reservoir at Mettur from 2,931 cusecs on Monday to 5,268 cusecs on Tuesday.

Public Works Department officials said that the dam level increased from 67.64ft on Monday to 68.11ft on Tuesday morning against the full reservoir level of 120 feet. The dam has 31.10 tmcft water as against its capacity of 93.47 tmcft.

Currently, 500 cusecs of water has been discharged for drinking water purpose.

Officials said that the situation is expected to continue for another few days thereby increasing the water level.

The dam is usually opened for kuruvai crop on June 12. With the current level of water, the dam is unlikely to be opened on the date.
