Prof. dies after being hit by Minister’s vehicle

A 51-year-old man succumbed to the injuries he sustained after his scooter was hit by the official vehicle of Minister for Panchayats M.K. Muneer at Kayamkulam late Monday evening.

According to the police, the deceased, Sasikumar, hailed from Muthezhathu in Kayamkulam and was a professor at the Malayalam Department of NSS Hindu College, Changanassery.

The incident occurred by around 10.30 p.m. at the Kamalalayam junction, near the KSRTC bus station, along the National Highway. The deceased was going home when his two-wheeler was knocked down by Dr. Muneer’s vehicle. He was soon rushed to the nearby Kayamkulam government hospital by the Minister and a few police personnel. Mr. Sasikumar was later referred to the Government T.D. Medical College at Vandanam, where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident triggered tension when several passersby attempted to block the Minister. Dr. Muneer was soon escorted to the Kayamkulam guest house, from where he was transported in a different vehicle.

The police have registered a case against the driver, Sameer, 30, of Karakunnu, Malappuram. The vehicle has been taken into police custody. The deceased is survived by wife, Asha, and two children.
