Qualifier Nandini Sharma battled her way past Amrita Mukherjee 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-2 in the first round of the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament here on Tuesday.
Second seed Dhruthi Venugopal defeated the big-serving Asha Nandakumar who struggled by serving 11 double-faults. Dhruthi led 5-1 and 5-2 in the two sets before cruising home.
Eighth seed Riya Bhatia handled the talented left-hander, qualifier Saumya Vig, with competence in the second set in which the latter fought hard to be on par till 5-5, after having been blanked in the first set.
