The UK WEEE regulations were introduced to the UK in 2007 to minimise the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment that ends up in landfill. This legislation applies to all companies who manufacture and sell electrical and electronic equipment under their own brand, resell equipment produced by other suppliers under their own brand or import EEE on a professional basis into an EU Member State.
For Specifiers of electrical and electronic equipment, it is always important to ask producers to present their WEEE registration numbers. By UK law, the producer must be registered for WEEE, or risks being reported to the Environment Agency and legal action taken. Specifiers who purchase from unregistered producers, risk being responsible for the funding of any recycling that may be required.
For the Producer, choosing the right compliance scheme is important. Funded by over 150 members and set up by and for the lighting industry, Recolight is the leading authority in the UK for lighting WEEE, providing comprehensive compliance for producers of lamps, LEDs and luminaires. Recolight continues to work hard to ensure all producers in the lighting supply market are WEEE compliant.
