Only 1 In 4 Workers Worldwide Have A Secure Job [Infographic]

This article is more than 8 years old.

According to a report from the International Labour Organization (ILO), a global trend towards insecure employment has taken hold since the onset of the financial crisis. Today, only a quarter of the world's workers are on permanent contracts. The rest are either unpaid at home, self-employed, working informally or employed on a temporary contract.

The shift towards insecure contracts has resulted in growing rates of poverty and inequality, according to the ILO. The number of people, especially women, in part-time employment is also increasing. While this may well result in increasing flexibility, its rise may be down to lack of better options. Indeed, the shift towards insecure work may accelerate the pattern of weak global demand and slow job creation brought on by the financial crisis.
