Live updates: Rupee closes stronger against dollar at 63.67

Here are the key developments affecting the domestic and international markets today

5:00pm: The rupee closes stronger against dollar at 63.67 per dollar, up 0.08% from its previous close of 63.72.

3:30pm: The S&P BSE Sensex closes 0.15%, or 41.77 points, lower at 27,645.53, while the CNX Nifty declines 0.10%, or 8 points, to end at 8,365.65.

3:08pm: The S&P BSE Sensex trades flat at 27,678.03 points in choppy trade.

2:27pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is now down 51.28 points, or 0.19%, to 27,636.02. The CNX Nifty also falls 18.40 points, or 0.22%, to 8,355.25.

2:20pm: In a volatile session today, the equity markets shed all their gains to trade in the negative territory again.

1:27pm: The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at day’s high of 27,814.83, up 127.53 points, or 0.46%. The CNX Nifty, meanwhile, is trading at 8,411.25, up 37.60 points, or 0.45%.

12:50pm: Apollo Hospitals shares rise 1.6% on reports that the company is considering acquisitions in northern India in a bid to counter rival Fortis Healthcare Ltd’s foray in the country’s south. The speciality chain is looking to purchase a facility in Mumbai that delivers at least 20% return on capital and one that fetches significant market share, managing director Suneeta Reddy said in an interview in Chennai. 12:32pm: The BSE Sensex is trading up 58.62 points, or 0.21%, to 27,745.92.

12:18pm: Among the Nifty gainers, Vedanta Ltd jumps 4%, Hero MotoCorp Ltd is up 2.8%, Ultratech Cement Ltd 2%, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd 2% and Tata Power 1.3%.

Among the losers, ONGC is down 1.5%, NMDC Ltd falls 1.3%, HDFC 1.2%, Cairn India Ltd 1.1%, while Tata Motors Ltd 1%.

12:15pm: Among the sectoral indices, CNX IT index is the top gainer, up 1%, followed by CNX Metal, CNX Realty and Infra, which were up 0.9% each.

12:14pm: The Nifty reversed losses to hit the 8,400 mark, its day’s high, up over 25 points, or nearly 0.4%.

11:49pm: The S&P BSE Sensex erass losses to trade flat at 27,682.04, down just 5.26 points, or 0.02%.

11:35am: Zuari Agro Ltd rises 2.4% to 216 after the company said the its arm Zuari Fertilisers and Chemicals acquired 36.56% stake in Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd (MCFL). With this stake buying, Mangalore Chemicals becomes arm of Zuari Agro, it added. Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd slip 3.6% to 63.70.

11:25am: Kelllton Tech Solutions Ltd surges 12.5% to 74.60 on BSE after the company said it is in the final stage of acquiring a US-based IT Solutions company with revenue of about $40 million. The company anticipate completing the acquisition by month-end, pending regulatory approvals, and financial closure.

11:00am: Radha Madhav Corp. Ltd climbs 7% to 43 after the company reported a net profit of 19.31 crore in the March quarter compared with net loss of 32.10 crore a year ago.

10:37am: The S&P BSE Sensex trims losses to trade 46.52 points, or 0.17%, lower at 27,640.78.

10:32am: Just Dial Ltd advances 5.1% to 1,131.55. A huge block deal was executed on the counter on the exchanges, Bloomberg reported. Around 3.79 million equity shares, or 5.4% stake of the company, have changed hands in two block deals. Further details of buyers and sellers were not available.

10:28am: Bharti Airtel Ltd is up 1% to 401.70 after a news report said that it is in advanced talks to buy out Augere Wireless Broadband India for about 150 crore to consolidate its 4G high-speed broadband footprint ahead of Reliance Jio Infocomm’s launch.

10:24am: National Buildings Construction Corp. Ltd (NBCC) climbs 3.2% to 813.05 after the company said it is in pact with NAWADCO for developing four properties involving an overall constriction cost of 398 crore.

10:19am: Sterlite Technologies Ltd extends gains for a second day, jumping 6.1% to Rs70.05, after the company said its board has approved a corporate restructuring plan. The company will spin off its power business into a separate unlisted company, while retaining its telecom operations in the existing listed entity. The de-merger will be effective 1 April 2015, subject to all necessary approvals.

10:15am: Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India Ltd declines 2.6% to 246 after the company reported a 57% decline in net profit to 10.42 crore in the March quarter compared with 24.38 crore a year ago.

10:12am: NRB Bearing Ltd is down 3.4% to 125 after the company reported net profit of 11.67 crore for the March quarter, down 2.67% from a year ago.

10:08am: AXISCADES Engineering Technologies Ltd falls 4.2% to 238 after the company reported 32.16% decline in its March quarter profit to 4.51 crore as compared with 6.65 crore in the same quarter last year.

10:04am: JBM Auto Ltd drops 10.7% to 211.70 after the company reported a 15.2% decline in its consolidated net profit to 17.58 crore in the March quarter as compared with Rs20.74 crore from a year ago.

10:00am: MM Forgings Ltd rises 3% to 711 after the company reported 42.16% increase in its net profit to 11.11 crore in the March quarter compared with 7.82 crore a year ago.

9:54am: Indo Rama Synthetics India Ltd surges 20% to 21.50 after the company reported a net profit of 30.84 crore in the March quarter compared with a net loss of 14.17 crore a year ago.

9:49am: Gainers—Hero MotoCorp Ltd jumps 2.8% to 2,591.20. Tata Power Co. Ltd rises 1% to 75.90 ahead of its March quarter earnings due later today. According to 14 Bloomberg analysts, the company may report a net profit of 77.2 crore in the March quarter as against a net loss of 150 crore a year ago.

9:50am: Losers among Sensex stocks—Housing Development Finance Corp. Ltd (HDFC) falls 1.5% to 1,243.65, while Gail India Ltd is down 1.4% to 387.50.

9:45am: BSE sectoral indices—the healthcare index is the top loser, down 0.4%, followed by consumer durables and oil and gas indices, down 0.2% each. The BSE power, realty and metal indices are top gainers, up 0.1% each.

9:42am: The markets are now trading lower. The BSE Sensex is down 0.28%, or 77.35 points, at 27,609.95, while the 50-share CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is down 0.3%, or 25.20 points, to 8,348.45.

9:40am: Earnings—AIA Engineering Ltd, Colgate-Palmolive (India) Ltd, Entertainment Network (India) Ltd, Pidilite Industries Ltd and Repco Home Finance Ltd are some of the companies that will release their earnings for the March quarter on Tuesday.

9:30am: The equity markets open flat after jumping to a three-week high on Monday.

9:24am: The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond was trading at 7.883% compared with its Monday’s close of 7.9%.

9:20am: The Indian rupee was trading weaker for a second consecutive session at 63.77 per dollar, tracking losses in Asian currencies. Read more.

9:12am: The dollar is steady on the day against its Japanese counterpart at 119.95 yen. The euro, which jumped to nearly four-month highs against the dollar last week, skids more than 1%.

9:08am: US crude futures edge up after slipping on Monday on stronger dollar and oversupply concerns triggered by Saudi Arabia’s report of its highest exports in nearly a decade. US crude rises about 0.1% in Asian trade to $59.47 per barrel, while Brent crude falls 0.2% to $66.13.

9:03am: MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan is up 0.2%. The CSI300 index surges 3.1% and the Shanghai Composite Index is up 2.6%. Japan’s Nikkei stock index adds 0.7%, rising to a three-week high, while the Topis adds 0.5%.

9:00am: Asian shares shrug off early losses, as rallying Chinese shares and Wall Street’s record close offset euro worries over Greece’s fiscal woes.

8:57am: US treasuries sank as stocks gained, and higher yields underpinned the dollar. The yield on benchmark 10-year treasuries notes rose to 2.237% from its US close on Monday of 2.228%.

8:55am: Wall Street stocks rose to record highs on views the Federal Reserve will hold off on raising interest rates. The Dow Jones industrial average was last up 40.76 points, or 0.22%, at 18,313.32. The Standard and Poor’s 500 Index was up 6.61 points, or 0.31%, at 2,129.34. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 28.97 points, or 0.57%, at 5,077.26.
