Johannesburg - The police special investigative unit, the Hawks, announced on Tuesday that it is investigating spy allegations at the SA Revenue Service (Sars).

“The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations would like to confirm that we have received affidavits from two individuals who are implicated in the Sars spying scandal which was widely reported on weekend newspapers,” Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hamgwani Mulaudzi said in a statement.

He said a docket had also been opened and investigations into the matter were underway.

Acting Head of the Hawks Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza asked “the media and the all interested parties to allow the Directorate to conduct its thorough investigations without any interference”.

“We need time to assess the case and involve other relevant stakeholders to successfully investigate issues at hand. In doing so we need not divulge sensitive information to the media for fear of jeopardising the case,” said Ntlemeza.

Mulaudzi said the Hawks would not comment anymore on the matter, unless progress which might be of public knowledge was attained.

The Sunday Times reported that affidavits had been submitted to the Hawks implicating former Sars deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay of illegal bugging the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) offices in 2007.

The spying was on former prosecutions head Vusi Pikoli and other senior NPA members who were investigating former police commissioner Jackie Selebi, the newspaper reported.
