No tsunami after 5.0 earthquake off Oman

An earthquake measuring 5 -magnitude struck the Sea of Oman yesterday, 255 kilometers from the country’s coastline.

The Oman Meteorology office confirmed the incident, saying: “An earthquake that measuring 5 on the Richter Scale was recorded in the sea of Oman, 255km from Oman coast at 3.16pm.”

Striking at a depth of 16kms, the Oman Met office further stated: “No risk of tsunami caused by the earthquake in the Sea of Oman that is being monitored.”

No loss of human life or damage to property has been reported, the Seismological Centre of Sultan Qaboos University further stated.

The Oman News Agency further stated the tremors were ‘relatively moderate and didn't affect population and properties’.

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) also confirmed the tectonic activity in the area.

This is the second such incident occurring in the area, with tremors measuring 5.5 on Richter Scale were felt in the Sea of Oman, off Pakistan’s coastline, on May 14.
