About 40 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs. 36,000 in cash were burgled from two houses under Subramaniapuram police station limits in the city in the last two days.
Police said that the house of A. Chandrakumar (40) on Old Murugan Talkies Road in Palanganatham was burgled when the family members were away in Kodai Road. Chandrakumar was running a medical shop in Kodai Road. His wife was a teacher in a city school.
The family members, who left the house on Saturday, returned on Wednesday. The police said that the burglars did not break open any lock. They could have used duplicate keys to open them. However, they broke open two almirahs and laid their hands on 30 sovereigns of gold and Rs. 20,000 in cash.
In the other incident, the house of K. Ramesh (38) in Kurinji Street at Azhagappan Nagar was burgled. The police said that Ramesh, who was running a pesticide shop in South Veli Street, and his family members had gone to Tuticorin to offer prayers to the family deity on Monday.
The family returned home on Thursday afternoon and found the main door and an almirah inside the house broken open and over eight sovereigns of gold and Rs. 16,000 in cash missing.
The police said that the burglars could have struck at the locked houses while it was drizzling through the night to escape the attention of neighbours.
