Manufacturing industry is the main employment-generation sector, and Government of India should focus on sectors including automobiles, auto components, tourism and textiles.

This will help to solve the problem of unemployment among the educated youth, according to G. Sekaran, Chief Scientist, Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai.

Delivering the special address at the Graduation Day of Priyadharshini Engineering College (PEC) in Vaniyambadi on Sunday, Dr. Sekaran said that today only about 20 per cent of the engineering graduates were employed with salary commensurate to their qualifications.

Another 10 per cent were under-employed. The remaining 70 per cent were unemployed, he added.

Campaign

The ‘Make In India’ campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aimed at making India a 20-trillion $ US economy.

It stemmed from his perception that development is employment-generating, and employment is enabled by skills.

He called upon the students to enhance their employability skills by utilising the opportunities provided by the National Small Industries Corporation.

Justice V. Rengasamy, former Judge of the Madras High Court and Administrator of the Jai Bharath Education Trust which runs the college advised the students to perform their duties towards their parents and then contribute to the society.

Endowment award

M. Lubana Afreen, final year B.E. Computer Science and Engineering student who won laurels to the college by obtaining the 50th rank in CSE in Anna University and A. Imran Khan who was the PG topper in the MCA stream were awarded the Endowment Fund Award of the VIT Chancellor.
