Demanding the construction of groyne, a group of fishermen from Pallam, a coastal hamlet near Kanyakumari, submitted a petition to Collector Sajjan Singh Chavan on Monday.

The petitioners said the hamlet, housing 800 fishermen families, were suffering a lot during the season between April and July due to sea erosion that badly damaged the fibreglass boats. Whenever the fishermen of Pallam take their boats to nearby Chinnamuttom area to safely keep their vessels, the fishermen in that village were opposing it.

To save the fishermen and their vessels, the district administration should construct groyne at Pallam, the petitioners said. Fishermen from Manakkudi also submitted a similar petition to the Collector.
