Mixels Series 5 adds three new tribes to the collectable toys, Cartoon Network show and iOS app.
Mixels launched in 2014 as a cartoon short and collectable LEGO toy line. The series stars the titular Mixels, creatures that can combine with one another to overcome challenges.
The combination of a toy and cartoon was joined by a mobile app in 2014, Calling All Mixels (iOS). Recently trying the game out with my kids I was surprised how well it integrated with the cartoon show, although less-so with the toys themselves in light of the upcoming LEGO Dimensions.
In the game you are charged with saving the Mixels by using their different powers to defend your turf. It's a little like an action adventure and tower defense. Players can combine two Mixels to unlock new powers -- a mechanic that hooks into the Mix-or-Merp element of the cartoon where different characters try (and sometimes fail) to team up. They can also collect items to make new defenses and Cubit Collectors.
It's a nice mix of strategically laying out your defenses and then running around attacking the Nixels in real-time. The only missing piece of the puzzle, as my seven year old put it was, "I want to bring-in my real Lego Mixels to fight for me." Perhaps we'll see Mixels in LEGO Dimensions, time will tell.
Series 1, 2 and 3 were released last year and Series 4 appeared in February. In June the Mixels Series 5 will be released in stores, along with related Cartoon Network shows. Although these are not sold in blind bags like other collectable LEGO Minifigures, they do sell out so it's worth getting the characters you want sooner rather than later.
As you can see, ToyTesters.tv recently worked with Lego to test out the upcoming Series 5 Mixels on some of their young toy testers in London's Hamleys toy store. Although not overwhelming, the Mixels generally seemed to go down well.
Series 5 brings three new tribes, each with three characters:
- The Klinkers: Kamzo, Gox and Jinky.
- The Frosticons: Snoof, Krog and Chilbo.
- The Lixers: Turg, Spugg and Tungster.
Series 5 Mixels are expected to be in store on 1st June. Series 6 is expected later in the year. I had a look at Series 6 Mixels at this year's New York Toy Fair as you can see above.
