The Centre of Excellence for Adolescents and Youth, an initiative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was recently launched by Rajiv Pratap Rudy, minister for skill development and entrepreneurship.
The centre is an on-ground and online solution for fulfilling the needs of young people aged 10-24. It aims to improve the availability of knowledge and services for young people.

On the reason behind this initiative, Frederika Meijer, UNFPA representative India and country director, Bhutan, said, “India is home to the largest youth population in the world offering a historic opportunity to invest in and enable the `youth bulge' to become the driver of inclusive and sustainable development. The centre will focus on meeting the needs of young people, by providing them a platform to find information and services to fulfil their health, education and skill development needs. It will connect the government and other service providers, including the private sector with young people. This will, in turn, provide opportunities to fuel innovation for the youth.“
Research and development, a youth portal and a virtual marketplace through which it will assist youth in different aspects of growth, will be the three highlights of the centre. Furthermore, the centre will establish partnerships with South Asian and other international academic institutions and youth organisations, fostering regional and South-South co-operation. Added S Parasuraman, director, TISS, “The centre will set in place a comprehensive knowledge management system, based on cross-disciplinary research and in-house capacity development schemes.“
The youth portal, http:www.youthinfoindia.org, will be a comprehensive online database on young people, which will offer them a platform to express their voice. It will provide policymakers data on adolescents and youth so they can develop and strengthen youth-centric policies.
