The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the City Police on Sunday apprehended seven women seeking alms with four babies.

The unit including a few women police personnel launched their action near the busy central bus stand area and rounded up seven women. All the seven women in the age group of 19 to 35 years hailed from Gandhi Nagar area at Nagamangalam on the city’s outskirts. The male babies were all aged between one and one-and-half years.

The central bus stand and its vicinity were chosen as a perfect spot by the women to seek alms as it was always abuzz with movement of travellers. The team members attired in plain clothes went on their mission at around 11.30 a.m. upon spotting the women seeking alms with babies.

Attempts by the women to escape proved futile as the team chased and apprehended them. Those held were Indira, Rajeswari, Nagavalli, Bhuvaneswari, Nadiammal, Bannari and Ayyamal. Police sources said the infants belonged to some of the apprehended women.

The seven women and the children were subsequently handed over to the Cantonment police station where a case under The Tamil Nadu Prevention of Begging Act was registered.
