Chowk double murder: Cops to question duo arrested in Kanpur
LUCKNOW: The arrest of a notorious duo by Kanpur police in Nawabganj on May 12 has raised city cops’ hopes of solving the sensational Chowk murder case that occurred on October 30 last year. The two are infamous for shooting down victims during robbery, and cops suspect that they may have also executed the murder of crockery businessman Amit Dulani and his servant Dashrath. Armed with grainy pictures from CCTV cameras, a team of policemen from Chowk police station is set to leave for Kanpur jail to question the two.

The two arrested—Shubham alias Raju and Suraj Singh— are from Dubagga area of Thakurganj and Unnao respectively. The police have recovered about a dozen gold chains from Suraj’s wife out of which five are worth over a lakh.
Chowk circle officer Raj Kumar said, “Our hopes are pinned greatly on this development. We expect to find Dulani’s chain among the items recovered and also use electronic surveillance to check if they were present in Chowk on the day of incident.”
Amit Dulani and his servant Dashrath were shot multiple times in the businessman’s house in Lajpatnagar area of Chowk on October 30 last year. The assailants apparently came after Dulani’s chain worth about Rs 1.50 lakh and opened fire when he resisted the loot. Automatic pistol of 7.62 bore was used and four shots were fired. Kanpur police recovered pistols of the same bore from the arrested duo.
Police initially felt Dulani was shot down over business or personal rivalry. But four months on, the course of investigation changed when none of the theories proved helpful and robbery appeared the only motive. The narcotest of a suspect also failed to throw leads.
Circle officer of Swaroopnagar area in Kanpur, Atish Kumar Singh said, “Suraj and Raju had assumed a different identity and were staying in Shuklaganj area of Unnao. They had run riot in both Kanpur and Lucknow and have confessed to scores of incidents. They were out on bail.”
