Plans are afoot to have a museum in each district of the State to enable people to appreciate better, local history and heritage of the region. If implemented, the number of museums under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, will increase from 15 to 30.
The department has asked deputy commissioners to identify at least two acres of land in their districts for establishing the museum.
Experts, however, say the focus should be not just on increasing numbers but also on ensuring that the museums meet international standards.
N.S. Rangaraju, retired professor, Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, University of Mysore, said none of the State’s museums meet international norms of minimum requirement of light, temperature and humidity control.
