The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a divided house over the resolution adopted by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) Council regarding Kanaka Durga Building Cooperative Society.

Allegations have been levelled that the layout for the society had been passed by the civic body sans the mandatory approval from the erstwhile Vijayawada-Guntur-Mangalagiri-Tenali Urban Development Authority (VGTM-UDA).

The division of opinions came to open at an emergency meeting held at Kesineni Bhavan over the issue, when Vijayawada (Central) MLA Bonda Ummaheswara Rao, TDP Urban convener Buddha Venkanna and Nagul Meera suggested cancelling the resolution.

Soon, the TDP leaders resorted to levelling corruption charges against each other, alleging that huge amounts had changed hands when the layout was passed in the council meeting. The warring groups reportedly sought the party high command’s intervention in the issue.

The allegations and counter allegations are aimed at Mayor post, party sources say. Mr. Ummaheswara Rao’s comments that Mayor post would be on rotation basis buttress the theory that moves are on to change the guard at VMC Council, they say. A couple of senior corporators from Vijayawada (Central) constituency, who were aspiring to become Mayor, are said to be behind this drama. Koneru Sridhar, corporator from Vijayawada (East), became Mayor without support of any MLA a year ago.

The party highcommand, after considering the caste, considered him for the Mayor post, while nominating Hari Babu from Vijayawada (West) as the floor leader and Gogula Ramana Rao from Vijayawada (Central) as the Deputy Mayor. Vijayawada (Central) constituency has 17 TDP corporators, highest in the city.

However, the issue came in handy to the Congress. City Congress president Malladi Vishnu said that the corrupt practices of the TDP leaders had been exposed with this resolution as the layout was approved against the rules. The Corporation had adopted the resolution without discussion as half of the corporators were absent, when it was passed in the council, he pointed out.

He also submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner G. Veerapandiyan to take necessary action.

The layouts allegedly had been passed sans mandatory nod from the erstwhile VGTM-UDA
