District Collector M. Ravikumar inaugurated the surveillance cameras installed in six Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses on Saturday.
After Srivaikuntam and its surrounding villages recently witnessed a few murders with caste overtones, police found that trivial quarrel erupting in the buses also had become one of the reasons for these murders.
To check this problem, the police decided to install surveillance cameras in the private and the government buses plying to various destinations via Srivaikuntam.
Moreover, ‘Bus Marshals’ were also deployed in the buses to check eve-teasing, altercations, playing of songs and speeches hailing caste leaders, writing of caste names in buses etc.
While the private buses installed the cameras on their own, private companies were roped in to sponsor the cameras to be fitted in the government buses.
The Collector, who inaugurated this scheme on April 24 last in the first phase, inaugurated the cameras fitted in six Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses on Saturday in the presence of ADSP D. Kandasamy, Regional Transport Officer K. Ananth, General Manager, TNSTC, Murugan.
