Surat BJP leader gets Rs-2 cr extortion call

We suspect the involvement of someone known to Yuvraj and are probing the case, police said.

Yuvraj Patil, vice-president of the BJP’s Udhna ward unit in Surat, who is a builder, got an extortion call for Rs two crore from an unidentified number. A complaint in this connection had been registered at Athwa police station in Surat by the victim.

Patil, a resident of Bamroli road in Udhna, was at the office of his legal advisor, advocate Alkesh Gandhi, at Nanpura area in Surat on the evening of May 13 when he received a call from an unknown number. The caller identified himself as Parveen Raut and told him to arrange Rs 2 crore in 24 hours or else he would be killed. The caller also said that if he tried to run away, they would kill his son and warned against complaining to the police. Patil first thought it was a prank, but on Thursday evening, he received another call and SMS from the same number. Patil contacted Athwalines police and lodged complaint against the caller. Police said that the caller spoke in Hindi and seemed to be well-informed about the BJP leader’s personal life.

Athwalines police inspector D P Vaghela said, “We have registered a complaint against an unidentified person on the basis of an application given by Patil. We have taken his statement to find out whether he has any enemy. We have taken the copy of the SMS sent by the accused and the voice recording of the extortion call. We suspect the involvement of someone known to Yuvraj and are probing the case.”
