2 vehicle thieves arrested, 5 bikes recovered

HARIDWAR: The police yesterday busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters by arresting two thieves who allegedly used to lift vehicles of people who used to come for shopping at the weekly vendor markets at BHEL.

The police yesterday busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters by arresting two thieves who allegedly used to lift vehicles of people who used to come for shopping at the weekly vendor markets at BHEL.

While Vijay Kumar and Jogendra Saini, both residents of Saharanpur district, were arrested, their third accomplice Shaukendra, a resident of Ramnagar in Saharanpur, is still at large. Five two-wheelers allegedly lifted from the BHEL township weekly markets at Sectors 1, 4 and 5 were recovered from their possession. The trio are motor mechanics and they either used to sell stolen bikes or use their parts at their auto repair shop at Saharanpur.

Sadar Circle Officer Rajesh Bhatt said, on a tip-off, Vijay and Jogendra were arrested from the BSP tri-section at Ranipur last evening while they were riding a motorcycle stolen from the Ranipur-Chandracharya square on May 13.

"In the past few months, more than 12 motorcycles have been stolen from the BHEL markets. We had formed a special team under the SHO of Ranipur police station to arrest the thieves. The accused have admitted to stealing more than 20 vehicles from Haridwar, Saharanpur, Meerut, Delhi and the NCR. We are in touch with the Uttar Pradesh and NCR police in the case," said Bhatt.

Investigating officer Rajeev Rauthan said kingpin of the gang Vijay had visited Haridwar district 20 times in the past three months on days when markets were held at BHEL.

Meanhwhile, the SSP has given a reward of Rs 2,500 to the investigating team. The team comprised sub inspectors Harpal Singh, Sanjeev Chauhan, and Darshan Singh Bisht and constables Arvind Gill, Ravindra Singh, Uday Singh, Dinesh Tomar, Pramod Purohti, Mahesh, Vivek and Manoj.
