Celtic bank on Massa

IN HOT SEAT: Clinton Larsen
IN HOT SEAT: Clinton Larsen

Clinton Larsen believes he will have one of the meanest attacks in the Absa Premiership next season after signing on Ugandan striker Geoffrey Massa.

Massa, from AmaTuks, may not be as prolific as he is for his national team, but the burly forward is a constant threat and Larsen believes his presence is exactly what fellow striker Lerato Lamola needs to get more goals.

Lamola scored 13 league goals playing more as a target man this season, but he'll be able to pounce on the second ball with Massa as his strike partner.

"We identified the striking department as the area we need to improve. Massa is a big, powerful striker and he can get to the end of crosses. He shoots very well and he can hold the ball up and create opportunities for teammates," said Larsen.

"We have been watching him. We believe Lamola is not a target man. He is better playing off somebody. Hopefully that combination will work."

Larsen, meanwhile, has shown little sympathy for his players in the wake of the cancellation of their season-ending awards ceremony. Celtic lost their last three league matches to finish seventh, below their minimum target of fifth, and angered owner Max Tshabalala so much he cancelled the post-season party.

"The bad run was a combination of things, but I think securing our top-eight position some three weeks prior to the end of the season actually worked against us," he said. "That's when the players started to relax, despite the fact that we warned them about complacency and to keep our intensity.

"We told them they had to stay focused and not go into holiday mode, but too many of them did.

"It was also a case of players tiring, I think. We also had a lot of young players and knew this season that inconsistency would be a factor. But I think we will come out stronger for the experience."
