Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment Bandaru Dattatreya on Thursday exuded confidence that very soon, the Employees State Insurance (ESI) hospital at Sanatnagar would be developed as a teaching hospital. He told presspersons during a visit to the ESI Corporation’s regional office that the proposals pertaining to the ESIC takeover of the hospital and turning it into a teaching hospital with an investment of Rs. 800 crore were being processed and that the corporation was discussing them with the Telangana State Government.
“With the number of migrants to the twin cities from the surrounding districts and other States ever on the rise, we feel the need to expand medicare facilities for the working classes,” he said, adding that health and education were the biggest gift that the government could give to the poor. He referred to the example of how this year Rs. 5.51 crore was released in Telangana, as scholarship to children of beedi workers.
Mr. Dattatreya said beedi and cine workers and those involved in hazardous work including mica mines and other mining operations desperately needed better healthcare facilities and that was the endeavour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There were several welfare schemes already in existence and more were being added in a time-bound manner, he said, citing the example of how the government was looking at providing mobile healthcare facilities in certain sectors.
