The Union government has given the nod for setting up a marine police battalion at Ezhimala in Kannur district, and the formalities have been completed, Minister for Home and Vigilance Ramesh Chennithala has said.

He was commissioning a Rs.82-lakh dormitory at the coastal police station at Vizhinjam here on Thursday.

Mr. Chennithala said the government had approached the Union government for its assistance in setting up a Marine Police Academy in the State. “But, the academy has been sanctioned to Gujarat,” he said.

The government was taking steps to sanction the posts needed for 10 coastal police stations. The other coastal police stations would come up at Kumbla, Thrikkarippur in Kasaragod district, Alathur, Vadakara, Kannur, Thalassery, Vellode in Thrissur district, and Arthunkal in Alappuzha district.
