Parents of a nine-year-old schoolgirl on Thursday alleged their daughter was regularly humiliated and made to stand in the sun by a teacher just because she arrived at the school early. On Wednesday, the girl had a high fever and was advised rest by a doctor.

Acting on the complaint, Director of Public Instruction Kamlesh Kumar sent officials to visit the Government Model High School, Sector 38 (W), to verify facts. “If this comes out to be true, then the teacher will be suspended,” he said.

The officials will submit their report on Friday.

The matter came to light when the parents visited the DPI office, and alleged that the principal had ignored their complaint. They sent copies of the complaint to the UT Advisor, SSP, IGP, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the SHO of the Sector 3 police station, along with the doctor’s certificate.

High drama was witnessed when the parents, who were accompanied by area councillor Narender Chaudhary and some others, raised slogans against the DPI, alleging misbehaviour. They said the DPI had asked them to sit on the floor.

The parents belong to an economically weaker section and their daughter Simarjeet Kaur studies in class V in the evening shift of the school, which runs from 1.15 pm to 5.30 pm. Since both parents work, they send the child to the school early. She reaches there when the morning shift is still on.

Festive offer

Father Manjeet Singh said a teacher punished their daughter every day for coming early by making her stand in the sun. “The teacher had once announced in the class that nobody should speak to our daughter. We had met the principal, but she did not do anything and, instead, defended the teacher,” said the father.

Principal Vibha Thareja said the teacher was not at fault, she had just advised the girl’s parents to send her on time and not two hours early because she had to wait in the sun for the school to begin.

She said the DPI had sent officials for an inspection and they had spoken to the girl’s classmates about the teacher’s dealing with the child and other students, and denied any misbehaviour.
