The Services Employees International Union, Local 1199, is pushing ahead with a campaign to unionize workers at Tufts Medical Center, even though merger talks between Tufts and Boston Medical Center have collapsed.
The SEIU, which represents about 2,500 workers at Boston Medical, said it would use a potential merger between BMC and Tufts to expand its membership at Tufts, as well. The hospitals on Wednesday said that they had ended their merger discussions.
“If anything, this news underscores the uncertainty facing workers at Tufts Medical Center and the need for Tufts staff to have a real voice in the future of their hospital,” Veronica Turner, executive vice president of the union, said in a statement.

Tufts’s workforce includes 1,056 union nurses who are members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
