IPL betting: 2 sent to Sabarmati jail, ED seeks ten-day remand

The two brothers caught by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Ahmedabad, from Delhi for allegedly betting on IPL cricket matches were sent to Sabarmati Central Jail here on Wednesday after they were produced before a district court. The ED officials have sought their remand for 10 days for questioning them. The court will hear the remand application on Thursday.

The accused brothers, identified as Ritesh Bansal and Ankush Bansal, in their early thirties, are residents of Delhi. They were caught by ED sleuths red handed last Saturday from Gurgaon. In the remand application, ED has claimed that they are part of an international cricket betting racket linked to bookies in Pakistan and Dubai. “The illegal betting racket, being run through betfair.com, involves payments through illegal channels within India and abroad including Dubai, Pakistan etc,” ED’s remand plea claimed.

According to remand application, the Bansal brothers are part of the network busted by ED in Vadodara in March where over a dozen persons were held. “Initial investigation revealed that on an average Rs 20 crore per match was involved in these illegal activities. The money involved comes to around Rs 800 crore as disclosed by one of the accused,” the application stated.
