Tuesday’s school roundup: Medfield beats Cohasset in battle of boys’ lacrosse state champions

Whatever Medfield boys’ lacrosse coach John Isaf said to his players at halftime must have really inspired them. In a battle between last year’s Division 2 and Division 3 state champions, host Medfied took down Cohasset, 13-9, Tuesday after trailing at the half.

“The way we played in the second half is what we want,” Isaf said. “We want team play, sharing the ball, and trying to get layups. So that’s what we felt good about.”

The Warriors (13-2) outscored the Skippers (13-3) in the second half, 7-2, to take control of the game.

Cohasset asserted itself early, though. Junior defenseman Jack Donohue (two goals) netted a goal and freshman Will Thomas followed with another to put the Skippers up, 2-0.

“This is why we schedule games like this, to play a great team like [Cohasset],” Isaf said. “They obviously play the game really well and have a really strong defense. We knew [Donohue] was trouble in transition and we didn’t follow the game plan.”

But within minutes, Medfield responded and took a 3-2 lead.

Sam Hurley (two goals), Jack Cahill (two goals), and John MacLean (three goals) punched in the goals to get the Warriors back in the game, and they were able to keep pace with Cohasset for the remainder of the first half.

“We’ve always been a team that’s tried to focus on balance and distribution of scoring, and I think a lot of different guys helped us today,” Isaf said. “Even if they didn’t score the goal, it was setting it up with a great cut, or a great clear-through, or a ‘hockey assist’ pass.”

After being down at the half, 7-6, Medfield notched four straight goals to take command. Midfielder Kevin McCordic (two goals, two assists) scored two in a row at the end of the third to provide momentum.

The Medfield defense dominated the rest of the game. Isaf called Cohasset’s Jeff Powers and Danny Axelson “monsters,” and credited the Medfield defense for containing the Cohasset stars.

“I thought Sam Naumann did a great job defending Powers today, and [Andrew] Garfield, our short-stick D-mid, covering Axelson,” Isaf said. “Those guys really did a great job guarding guys, and they followed the game plan.”

Softball

The Latin Academy softball team continued its City League dominance Tuesday, defeating host Dorchester, 21-6, in five innings at Roberts Field.

Latin Academy (10-4) improved to 6-0 in City play, games in which the Dragons have outscored their opponents, 98-18. All six games ended early due to the mercy rule.

Latin Academy has not lost a City game in eight years (62-0).

“Before, when I first took over, we had battles with East Boston, but the last couple years we’ve had a well-rounded team,” said Latin Academy coach Rocco Zizza. “We’ve had great pitching, good hitting, and good fielding, and so it’s really been a team effort.”

Latin Academy started the game with four consecutive hits that brought in two runs. In the second inning, the Dragons’ bats exploded again for four more runs and then seven more in the third.

In the second inning, Zizza replaced his starting pitcher, sophomore Olivia McGrath, with freshman McKenzie Theriault. The Dragons’ pitchers (McGrath, Theriault, Jessica Rynne, Caitlin Castor) threw a combined three-hitter with 12 strikeouts.

“We knew the game was going to be very competitive, [Dorchester coach Richard Moran] does a great job, but he just doesn’t have the guns,” Zizza said. “[Using a lot of pitchers is] just a way of getting some pitchers in just in case someone gets hurt. You need backup, so it’s a way of developing pitching in games like this.”

Dorchester’s Melissa Louisdhon broke up Latin Academy’s no-hit bit in the third inning, but was still in a 13-0 hole.

It was 20-0 in the fourth inning before Dorchester (4-7) would score its first two runs of the game, off a sacrifice fly and wild pitch.

Dorchester would have another solid inning in the fifth, scoring four runs off two hits. Two of the runs scored on wild pitches and one off a throwing error.

“I’m disappointed we made some errors,” Zizza said. “We got good work by the pitchers and good work by the catchers, too.

“In a game like this, we have to improve the mental aspect of it because there’s a lot of time . . . we get lazy in the field.

“In the City League it’s different, we can only beat ourselves. We have to be mentally tough a lot of the times.

“We’re still young. We still have a long way to go and we can hit a lot better. We just hope we survive our own mistakes.”
