VADODARA: A man convicted in the 2002 Sabarmati Express carnage at Godhra and another accused acquitted in the same case allegedly murdered a 30-year-old man. The duo had thrashed him to recover Rs 500 that they had lent him.
The accused Kasim Biryani and Badshah Behera had allegedly beaten up Mohsin Mamji on May 4 with pipes and sticks. Mamji (30) was admitted to the SSG Hospital at Vadodara with multiple fractures and internal hemorrhage.
He died on Monday night.
Godhra B-division police inspector N V Patel said that Biryani was sentenced to life imprisonment for the carnage case while Behera was acquitted. Biryani had lent Rs 500 to Mamji who wanted to go on a pilgrimage.
Patel said that Mamji never went on the journey and the accused asked him to return the money. During a quarrel over the issue, Mamji was attacked with a pipe and a stick by the accused badly injuring him.
Patel said that efforts were being made to nab the accused duo in the case. Mamji, he said, also was involved in vehicle theft.
