Mechanics to stage hunger strike today

May 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:50 am IST - CHENNAI:

Mechanics from across the city will be sitting on a one-day fast in Chepauk on Wednesday, protesting the proposed Road Transport and Safety Bill.

The fast, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is being conducted by the Two Wheelers Mechanic Shop Owners Association. “The new bill will affect our livelihood at it states that servicing should be done by the respective automobile company itself,” said R.A. Dhanapal, secretary of the association.

According to him there are over 5,000 mechanics in the city and more than a lakh across the State. “Apart from us, those who run spare parts shops and do tinkering, welding and painting will also be affected. The government should not introduce the new rules,” he added.

He said that as of now, only those in the city will be taking part in the fast. “After this, we will holding such agitations in the districts and then, we are also planning a rally,” Dhanapal said. On April 30, transport unions held agitations against the bill across the State. Many private buses, autorickshaws and trucks stayed off the road.
