Tuesday’s school roundup: Medfield beats Cohasset in battle of boys’ lacrosse state champions

Whatever Medfield boys’ lacrosse coach John Isaf said to his players at halftime must have really inspired them. In a battle between last year’s Division 2 and Division 3 state champions, host Medfield took down Cohasset, 13-9, Tuesday after trailing at the half.

“The way we played in the second half is what we want,” Isaf said. “We want team play, sharing the ball, and trying to get layups. So that’s what we felt good about.”

The Warriors (13-2) outscored the Skippers (13-3) in the second half, 7-2, to take control.

Cohasset asserted itself early, though. Junior defenseman Jack Donohue (two goals) netted a goal and freshman Will Thomas followed with another to put the Skippers up, 2-0.

“This is why we schedule games like this, to play a great team like [Cohasset],” Isaf said. “They obviously play the game really well and have a really strong defense.

“We knew [Donohue] was trouble in transition and we didn’t follow the game plan.”

But within minutes, Medfield responded and took a 3-2 lead.

Sam Hurley (two goals), Jack Cahill (two goals), and John MacLean (three goals) punched in the goals to get the Warriors back in the game, and they were able to keep pace with Cohasset for the remainder of the first half.

“We’ve always been a team that’s tried to focus on balance and distribution of scoring, and I think a lot of different guys helped us today,” Isaf said. “Even if they didn’t score the goal, it was setting it up with a great cut, or a great clear-through, or a ‘hockey assist’ pass.”

After being down at the half, 7-6, Medfield notched four straight goals to take command. Midfielder Kevin McCordic (two goals, two assists) scored two in a row at the end of the third to provide momentum.

The Medfield defense dominated the rest of the game. Isaf called Cohasset’s Jeff Powers and Danny Axelson “monsters,” and credited the Medfield defense for containing Cohasset.

“I thought Sam Naumann did a great job defending Powers today, and [Andrew] Garfield, our short-stick D-mid, covering Axelson,” Isaf said. “Those guys really did a great job guarding guys, and they followed the game plan.”
