Woman stabbed to death by live-in partner

A 25-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her live-in partner in Sarita Vihar early on Monday morning. The accused was nabbed hours after the incident and the weapon of crime was recovered from him, the police said.

The victim, a married woman who was in the process of divorcing her husband, had apparently grown close to Vinod Gupta (40), who resided in the same building where she had rented out a room.

“Initial investigation points to the fact that the couple had a heated argument around 1 a.m. on Monday morning following which he stabbed her repeatedly with a kitchen knife and fled after leaving her in a pool of blood,” said a senior police officer.

Vinod , the victim’s neighbour, did odd jobs for a living, and, according to other occupants of the building, he was heard quarrelling with her prior to going missing.

The confrontation between the couple, the police said, drew the sole eyewitness to the incident – a young child residing in the same building – outside their locked flat. The child then peeped inside to see the victim being stabbed repeatedly by Vinod.

“My daughter came to me and described what she saw. I then went to Vinod’s room to find the woman lying injured with severe stab wounds. Vinod was missing,” the eyewitness’ father, Sushil Das, told the police. “The girl then brought her father to the flat. She even told him that it was Vinod who had stabbed her. She repeated her statement in front of a police team that carried the woman to hospital where she succumbed to injuries,” the officer added.
